Dr.
Reema Safadi, an associate professor at the University of Jordan, came
back from the United States as she finished working on her research
project at the University of Pittsburgh/ USA. Dr. Safadi was granted the
2015-2016 Fulbright Award for Scholars to work on a research project
with two professors, Professor V. Swigart and Professor R. Constantino,
(currently a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Jordan, Faculty of
Nursing) from the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, entitled:
"Comparison of the Impact of Social and Legal Factors on Gender-Based Violence Affecting Jordanian and Arab-American Women.”
Dr.
Safadi, was invited through the Fulbright Outreach Lecturing Fund
Program (OLF) to various universities’ campuses in the U.S. Through this
program she was invited to the College of Central Florida, to speak at
the panel discussion “International Panel on Global Migrant Crisis”
(Date: March 1-5, 2016).
There
were two panel discussions in two campuses, Citrus campus and Ocala
Campus. Panel Discussions were opened to students, staff, faculty and
members of the public. The title of the presentation was: “Global Migrant Crisis: Challenges and Solutions, The Jordanian Historical Experience.”
There was also another presentation titled: “Jordan and Research Experience as a Fulbright Research Scholar”,
this was attended by the college students. It was an occasion to
introduce students to Jordan, the Jordanian history, culture, the
Fulbright Scholarship, and the research project.
Dr.
Safadi was also invited by the University of St. Bonaventure in Olean,
New York, as part of the Women’s Studies Program in celebration of
Women’s Day. She was the keynote speaker for the 2016 Mary Devereux
Lecture where she gave two talks about her research project on two days:
April, 7th -8th, 2106.
The title of the two talks were: “Social
and Legal Factors Impacting Violence Against Women: A comparison
Between Jordanian and Arab-American Women.” “A Fulbright Journey
Facilitating Intercultural Collaboration.”
Besides
her research and lecturing activities, Dr. Safadi took the opportunity
of her stay in the U.S. to attend the 2015 Lamaze International
conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, from September 16-20, 2015 where she
attended two workshops and several presentations about Lamaze childbirth
education, and thus, obtained continuing education hours for the
purpose of certification as a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator
(LCCE).
To
become a certified educator, it was necessary to complete hours of
training by attending a three-days seminar (October, 21, 22, 23, 2016)
in Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, West Virginia, and sitting
for a certification exam on the 14th of April, 2016. With the exam
successful result, she became a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator
(LCCE).
Lamaze
International is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing
education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on
Accreditation. It is also a provider approved by the California Board of
Registered Nursing. The Fulbright journey was ended by attending the
Baltimore Fulbright Enrichment Seminar. This activity involved attending
a three-day seminar conducted by the U.S Fulbright Office in Baltimore,
Maryland, between April 19-21.
The title of this seminar was “Baltimore's
community awakening - The role of anchor institutions and grassroots
organizations in addressing the city's health and human rights issues.”
In conclusion, the Fulbright Scholarship at the University of
Pittsburgh, PA, was a successful experience for sharing scholastic and
cultural heritage with the public, students and academics in the United
States.

to the University of Jordan for granting me an unpaid leave to complete
this Fulbright Scholarship Award project, and to the University of
Pittsburgh/ PA, for offering the facilities and opportunity to be a
scholar on their campus.
